On 11th July, the Sino-German Mayors Forum was held in Essen City Hall. Mayors from Essen, Bautzen and Tianjin, well as city officials and academia from Essen, Duisburg and Saale attended the forum.
This year, the topic focused on urban transformation. Tianjin as well as Essen were characterized by their reliance on heavy industry. Steel and other traditional manufacturing industries used to be the economic pillar of Tianjin, while in the past decade new industries as Aereonautics and Astronautics, Artificial intelligence and new material industries are emerging. The city now seeks a way to restore the rivers while transforming to high-tech industries. Right now the percent of agriculture, manufacturing and service industry are 0.2%, 53.9%, 45.9% respectively.
Nevertheless, both cities have experienced a significant transformation towards a more climate-friendly model. In that scope, participants exchanged ideas on energy transition, industrial transition and ecological restoration.
