Policy for urban renewal in China has undergone significant changes since the 2000s, with the priority shifting from the speed of urbanization to the quality of urban life, the urbanization rate having risen from 10.64% in 1949 to nearly 60% in 2019. This year the Urban Renewal Annual Conference was successfully held in Tsinghua University, organized by the Chinese Urban Planning Institute and supported by the Sino-German Urbanization Partnership. Topics include
- Urban renewal policy in the urbanized and industrialized era, including presentations on case studies of Guangzhou, Wuhan and Nanjing, and on compact development
- Managing and regenerating public space, including presentations on elder-friendly community, regeneration of old industrial sites, etc.
- Improving inclusiveness and public participation, including presentations on ecological restoration, pilot project “shared community” in Beijing etc.
