How China’s Green Building Sector Can Grow Fivefold by 2030

The Chinese government has demonstrated a strong commitment to making green buildings a top priority in the coming years. Green buildings are designed to maximise the use of resources, producing little to zero energy waste. The government has implemented new programs, including a green building rating system, the ‘Three-Star Building System’, which rates buildings on their capacity to use energy more efficiently, providing hefty financial benefits to building projects that fulfill the government’s standards for building efficiency. Moreover, China’s 13th Five-Year Plan also places green buildings at the top of the agenda. By improving the energy performance tracking and data collection systems, and providing incentives for new projects to fulfill national (Three-Star Building System) and international (LEED) energy-efficiency criteria, the cities of Changning (Shanghai), Wuxi, and Suzhou (Jiangsu), have been leading the way in the application of techniques that make for more energy-efficient urban areas.
