The 2000 year-old city of Yangzhou has received support from the Cities Development Initiative Asia (CDIA) to upgrade its deteriorated urban areas, while at the same time preserving the city’s cultural heritage. Ancient buildings as well as old canals dating from the Tang and Song dynasties had begun to present a challenge for urban development in Yangzhou, while a lack of funding available for revitalisation further contributed to deterioration. CDIA supported the Yangzhou Construction Bureau in preparing pre-feasability studies for potential renewal projects and enabled their linking to finance. In this way, the city’s old town could be preserved, a major wetland park was developed and a water treatment plant was also installed to counteract industrially-caused water pollution along the ancient canals.
